EDsploration World: Technology Preview

It's far from perfect, but EDsploration World has a 3D Animator technology preview up and running: http://world.edsploration.org/

This is an early preview, and load / save is temporarily disabled. Creating basic objects works fine, and you can load textures and extrusions onto them. The animation system should work reasonably well (but has some minor bugs). The scripting system should work reasonably well, also.

The intent is to release this free and open-source. It needs some cleanup before that happens, though.

This is not intended to replace existing 3D modeling / animation programs, but to work with them. This is more of a high-level, scene- and world-builder, whereas Sketchup is great for creating buildings, Maya is great for character animation, etc. This is more like a X3D / SMIL animator, which loads and embeds things created by Sketchup, Maya, etc.

But more than anything, this is focused on education. This program is free and does not require any installation at all - you simply need Flash Player 10 - making it easily accessible in the developing world. It can be tied relatively-easily to content management systems like Drupal and Moodle. It can be arranged to run on anything from a cell phone to a PlayStation 3... or your computer. And with wide accessibility comes wide distributability. Making it a functional platform to take education to the developing world.

NTN - Driving Question

(New Tech Network)

Driving Question

A driving question ties all the material learned to a main question, which answers, "Why do I need to know this?"

NTN - Significant Points about Curriculum

(New Tech Network)

Significant Points about Curriculum:
  • Rigorous Core Curriculum
  • Integrated Courses
  • College Courses
  • Senior Projects
  • Professional Digital Portfolios
  • Internships & Community Service

NTN - "Why do I need to know this?"

(New Tech Network)

Make sure everybody knows why they need to know (X):
  • Students need to know why they need to know this material
  • Teachers need to know why they need to know this material, as well as why they need to know the process used to teach the material.
--

Technology is used to allow students to see what their grades are, broken down to the details, so they know exactly what they're doing right and what they're doing wrong.

NTN uses the "Echo (tm) Learning Environment". It's similar to Moodle, but more collaborative - like Facebook for education.

NTN - A day at New Tech

(New Tech Network)

A day at New Tech:

Some things outside: Band, Choir, etc.

Normal class periods: 55 minutes long

Integrated class periods: 2 x 55 minute classes

"[I think] In a true PBL class, the longer you have, the better you do."
(Not sure this is verbatim - Bibek)

  • Network Events
  • Community of Practice
  • Marketing Services
  • Certification Programs

New Tech - Developed by business leaders, approved by education leaders

(New Tech Network)

Developed by business leaders
  • New Tech was started by community and business leaders
  • It was designed to mirror the workplace.

And approved by education leaders
  • "Education today is more than just memoriation and learning facts. It involves talent. [...] These young people are working with each other and with the faculty and community. And they are really developing education and talent." -- Richard Riley, former Secretary of Education

NTN - Student Ownership

(New Tech Network)

"Students are also a [teaching] tool. Why not use them? ... When they teach a [skill], they really take ownership of it."

"If students can make a decision, let them do it."

(I can't promise that this is verbatim. Typos are my fault. - Bibek)
